Isla Mujeres - Memories on this beautiful island!
Have you ever been to a place that tends to stick in your mind and pop up when you think of past times? Isla Mujeres Mexico is that place for me.
I first went to Isla Mujeres Mexico with my dear Father-in-law back in the Mid 70’s and we stayed at the Hotel Rocamar. The Hotel Rocamar sits on a cliff on the northern windward side of the Island. It is/was relatively small and catered to clientele that were not looking to be catered to although the service that was available was impeccable.
Our room was on the water/windward side and was your basic Holiday Inn type room.
Two double beds a dinette and a bath, the basics. We had requested a room with Aire but were informed that there were none, nor the need for one. As we opened the door to our room we struggled with the door. The door worked fine but the wind/ air pressure made it difficult to open.
After throwing my bag down I stepped out on the balcony and found myself in heaven. I enjoyed the rolling surf, the wind and the spray off of the waves crashing upon the rocks, hence the name Hotel Rocks and Sea, was refreshing. We sat for a while on the balcony enjoying the wind, and surf spray after the long hot trip from Merida on the old highway.
It has been 35 years since that trip but the Hotel Rocamar is the only place I would stay upon my return. I don’t need, nor want all of the frills. I want to be able to make choices of my own, not what the all-inclusive thinks I want.
We spent the first day wandering about the island enjoying shopping. Shopping then was like being in the hippy’s hall of fame mall! Everything was hand-made and fun.
The next day we rented mopeds and did the entire island. The isla is ½ mile, if that, by about 5 miles and is about 14km NE of Cancun.
We swam with the sea turtles and then went on to the Garrafon. Even my friend that could swim and would have rather died than enter the water lost all of his fears that day swimming in the most beautiful place in the world.
The Garrafon is a reef at the southern end of the island at the base of a cliff. The cliff was decked out into flats with all necessary services. We rented mask and fins and spent the day swimming amongst you name it all day long.
If I had the opportunity, and the money, I would buy the Hotel Rocamar and happily live out my days on Isla Mujeres. Isla Mujeres has more than pristine white-sand beaches. It has natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage that speaks of its Mayan and Mexican ancestry and it has its own archeological sites, marine parks, tropical jungles and is one of the most unique destinations in the world.
