Relax in Sisal - a Must See Costal Town for the Traveler and Retiree

Sisal is a quaint little fishing town of 2,000 inhabitants with most of your day to day necessities available yet it is only a quick 25 minute drive to the city of Merida with all of its amenities.

"A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words"

Merida has beautiful shopping malls with merchandise from all over the world. Most of you will be surprised, as I was, at the choices and selections available.

One of the luxuries, that my wife and I love so much, is the cost of labor. I cannot tell you how nice it is to have a housekeeper and not have to clean the bathrooms, sweep, mop and dust…!

The cost of these luxuries... I believe them to be essentials... fits very nicely into the average retiree’s budget. yucatan lots Medical services have never been lacking in my experience when we lived in Merida earlier. Services have now been greatly enhanced by the opening of Star Medica an ultra modern hospital that is poised to meet all of your medical needs.

The town was founded in 1811, by Spain, when the port of Campeche could no longer meet the needs of the sisal rope growers around Merida. Since that time the rope and twine made from the fibers of the henequen plant have shared the ports name of Sisal, from where it was shipped. Eventually, the “Castle of Sisal” and its lighthouse were built to store and protect the cargo from pirates.

Today its importance has dwindled and has now settled in as a fishing village. The Reefs of Madagascar lie in front and remain a relatively unknown paradise for scuba divers and sport fishing. Watch the Local Dolphins! I personally enjoyed going fishing, on Sundays, with my Father-in-law where we would literally fill the bottom of the fisherman’s boat to the point that we had to walk on the plank seats.

The Beach Condos that we are purchasing are situated near the pier and also near the port. Actually, nothing is far from anything.

It literally is a small fishing village. You won’t find hotels, but there are many very good bar/restaurants on the beach and within the town. Of course you can always stop by a fisherman’s house or the restaurant 100 ft away and they will fry the fish caught that day right in front of you.

Personal note! My father-in-law does not normally care for fish but he found himself unable to stay away from the fried fish down there.

The Condos we are purchasing were repossessed by the bank when Mexico, like the rest of the world, was hit with the current financial crisis. The prior owner, knowing that he was about to lose the property, did what many do here in the U.S. He stripped the property of anything of value.

Hence the windows, the doors, toilets and sinks were removed and it has been sitting ever since waiting for someone with a great group of friends that know how to have a good time to come along and save her from her solitude.
