Valladolid Yucatan: one the best jumping off places to the Mayan experience!

The City of Valladolid Yucatan was relocated further inland after being established by the nephew of Francisco de Montejo, the: "Conqueror of the Mayas”.

In 1545, named after the capital of Spain, The City was built atop of the Maya city of Zaci. Zaci was destroyed and materials from the temples were used to build the original town.

The hotels are quite reasonable, clean and comfortable. One night a friend and I arrived on a late bus from Cancun, took in some of the city, and got some sleep. Valladolid would be the perfect place to stay for at least a few more nights.

The is a lot to see in the main square and around town. On Sundays families meet in the main square to listen to the local/ municipal bands.

The “War of the Castes” centered in this city. Many of the Spanish “blue Bloods” were killed during their retreat to Merida. The city continues, to this day, to be a center of Mayan and classical colonial living.

The market area is the perfect place for tourist to obtain classical Mayan wares at the best price!

This city is one the best jumping off places to the Mayan experience to visit the cave of Balancanchen, Chichen Itza, and the newly begun to be restored Ek-Balam .

While there take the opportunity to visit the cenote Zaci. The Cenote Zaci is a modern day tourist site where the traveler can have the opportunity to swim in the Ik Kil cenote, a cave full of water, and also enjoy food and refreshment in the restaurant built at the upper edge.
